Twilight- New Moon - Christians?

Here is a recent Convo I hosted on FaceBook... Some intresting thoughts on the Twilight series.
Enjoy.

DaNella J Duncan Auten Warning controversy here: Am I the only one who has a problem with "Christians" going to see a vampire movie? I don't expect you all to agree, but don't hate...

Melissa Harris Bazzano

I've read all of the books and there is nothing evil or demonic about them. They are fantasy and it really is just a love story.

Amanda West Grund

What is the problem, exactly?

DaNella J Duncan Auten

Ok Melissa I'll have to think on that one...
Amanda... well to start with it's a Vampire... I get stuck there.

"In ancient times, the term vampire did not exist; blood drinking and similar activities were attributed to demons or spirits who would eat flesh and drink blood; even the Devil was considered synonymous with the vampire.[61] Almost every nation has associated blood drinking with some kind of revenant or demon, or in some cases a deity" (Wikkipedia)

Melissa Harris I don't judge anything until I read or watch it myself.

DaNella J Duncan Auten

Ok Melissa, but what about the fact it is baised on a vampire?

Aaron Stykemain

Vampire=undead=problem.

Anissa Hunt

I agree...with Melissa :-) It is a love story...a great love story. The books are clean(I have read them twice) first movie was clean...its all based on a dream from a sahm who had never written anything before in her life.

DaNella J Duncan Auten

I'm for Stay At Home Mom's, I'm for love... I still have that vampire problem...

Enrique Esquivel

I`ll stick to star wars! =)

Amber Kimbril

I here ya DaNella. I want let my kids watch them and I want either.

Marci Taylor

Figure it is the Holy Spirit's job to guide each of us individually; personally, it takes most of my focus to keep my heart in tune to the Holy Spirit's leading to try to figure out what someone else should be doing. We are all in different spots on our journey with the Lord...I hope people give me grace in my journey when they feel something different has been revealed to them already. Just for the record, though...not a fan of vampires or anything pertaining to evil/death...for our family God has asked us to steer clear.

Debi Andrews

I'll stand with you, DaNella! ...Does any one have to hold a snake to judge rather or not it will bite you? ...I'm just saying.

Mark Meadows

Knowing fantasy from reality is a good place to start. Twilight is a love story about a teen girl and a "vegitarian" vampire. It does have a good moral to the story. Should read the book/s and then form an opinion. :)

Amanda West Grund

I was stuck on the vampire thing too, but I read the books anyway because so many of the young girls I knew had already read them, and I wanted to grasp what our youth ministry might be up against. I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly the books became a tool to express Godly concepts like abstinence, faith, prayer and eternity.

Anissa Hunt

Yes Amanda!!! I couldn't agree more!

Taryn Kimberly Donehoo

my mother use to guard everything i watch and my sister is aloud to watch twilight its not bad its the term vampire sounds bad but thats all thats bad cause people have the stereotypical view of a vampire in their head its an amped up version of romeo and juliet thats it nothing wrong with a fantasy love story

Tami Moreno

I'm with you DaNella - no vampires in this house. I take serious issue with it as well. Your not alone!

DaNella J Duncan Auten

I can see we are well divided on this issue... I guess my point is we have to draw the line somewhere... Amanda, you said they are good tools, but my thought is Satan comes as an angel of light... I think Marci makes a good point, we all have to work our our own salvation... However I guess this is just one I draw the line on... Enrique... lol And thanks to my supporters! lol. I guess we may have to agree to dissagree... I don't think it is something that will send anyone to Hell. I am certian you all have a personal relationship with God... and that is all that matters.

Amanda West Grund

Please don't mistake me. I don't think it is of God, but that it is something that can be turned around and used for God's purposes to connect with a hurting world. That said, I will respectfully agree to disagree. And not hate on ya ;0)

Enrique Esquivel

Not to raise controversy, but this info is interesting: The name Dracula means son of Dracul or son of the dragon or devil.

Stacey Wight Meadows

Had a real hard time with reference to "Christians" in quotes. Sure, not all who say they are truly are, but still.. This is definitely an issue where we work out our own salvation. I read the books and saw the movie, and have no wrong motives for either. I won't be upset with anyone who feels conviction about it, nor would i try to convince them to think as i do, and hope others can respect my decision as well.

Matt'n'Julia Freeman Davis

We were the only parents that did not allow our children to read/watch(it felt that way)....like you said...vampire, was enough of a reason for us. But we did consider it & heard the arguments for & against. My first thought was...wasn't the Count on Sesame Street a vampire? I honestly thought at times, maybe this was one of those times we were wrong & should let them. Then I would read even the back cover & just didn't feel right in my Spirit.

Now there are vampire shows on TV, and when we were @ Books a Million, the sweet love story "Twilight" books were stacked right next to the books about real vampires....

For us, we couldn't give our stamp of approval.

Jen Tornatore

We just had this very discussion at our house last night.. so it is interesting that you bring it up too. Yes I very much do have a problem with it. I believe as a Christian we do not only think about how it will effect us, and our kids. We have to consider how it is effecting our society, other peoples kids etc. I have seen way too much negative impact of making evil romantic in books and movies. When you see that happening in peoples lives, you have to take a stand. EVERYTHING we do is either honoring God or honoring Satan. There are no gray areas. I know that sounds harsh but it is reality. Having said that, I have things that are not vampires in my life I have to get rid of too... So I do not judge :-). The Bible does say in the last days evil will be called good, and good will be called evil, so this kind of thing should not be too surprising... it is happening all around us.

Anissa Hunt

I just want to say that I love my Jesus :-) I live for Him! (respectfully) I believe my relationship with Him shouldn't be questioned because I enjoy the Twilight saga...if that is the case...anyone's could be questioned based on what we watch or read for entertainment...crime shows on tv(what if someone said how could "Christians" watch people be murdered on tv for entertainment?" Romantic Comedies, dramas, sitcoms on tv....most deal with premarital sex among other things....so I think we all must draw our own line according to what will hurt or improve our walk with the Lord. That's just me :-)

Kilsharion Deborah Kinsey

I honestly cannot even begin to comprehend the mindset of "if I enjoy a fantasy novel, I will burn in hell and my walk with Jesus is compromised." Jesus and me? We're tight. As a matter of fact...wrap your mind around this one, if you please...reading one of those types of novels actually brought a point home that had nothing to do with devils, demons, satan, whatever and everything to do with God, my faith in Him, my walk with Him and my letting go and letting Him lead my life....so....yeah...stumbling block for you? Maybe...good enough. But...um...not so much on this end.

Sassyprincess Bowtique

I totally agree with you.....Not a vampire/twilight fan! I just wish that half these young ppl that go so crazy about it would do the same about God! Just imagine the revival we would have.

Matt'n'Julia Freeman Davis

All people have different opinions, which is what makes life so colorful & great! If I thought all of the people who watched Twilight were going to hell...ALL my friends would be headed there today! And most of them are Christians & love the Lord with all of their heart. Every person has to decide what God is asking of them & their family. To compromise those standards would be wrong for them and against God's will for their lives.

There is not much on TV, on any channel, that we feel comfortable watching. If I can see Jesus watching or reading it, then it's OK with me. What God expects of me...."Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there is any virtue, and if there is any praise, think about these things."

I also believe that God uses different tools to minister to different people...Glad that He spoke to you in a way that was relevant to you! Love you sis!

DaNella J Duncan Auten

wow thanks for the response guys. Didn't know this was such a can of worms... I have to agree with Julia, it comes down to "whatever things are..." and leave it there... Yes there are a lot of tv shows I don't watch because of that. There are a lot of movies I don't go to, because I refuse to pay money to hear "god******" I won't do it. I watch a lot of Discovery Health, and HGTV... and even that I have to turn off sometimes... Thanks for all the comments. This was fun. I like to debate with no hate... Love ya all!!!

Joan Smith

Well DaNella, I am in agreement with you....what timing for such a movie...not that any time would be good for me. I can't seem to see the attraction.

Leslie Vincent

Has anyone considered the fact the movies is really about pedophiles? The vampires look like teens but they are really hundreds of years old. Think about that one for awhile.

Quintin L. Auten

WOW this is truly amazing. The idea that a movie or book would stir up so much I don't think the issue is a book or movie, but what standard we as Christians use to live our lives by. It is true we are to work out our own salvation we to often leave out much of that verse Philippians 2:12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed... not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, we must not forget the fear and trembling. God is just and loving but He will judge us one day. we must walk in obedience. There is also the thought that if the Spirit isn't convicting it must be ok. Grow up. We live in time were truth is often relative we can justify our actions even using the word of God nothing new there though Satan has been twisting Gods word since the beginning. The Spirit will always line up with the word. It all comes down to this our lives must revolve around the word of God how we feel is irrelevant weather it is entertaining is does not matter. Weather Twilight or Desperate House Wives our standard as Christians is the same the Word of God. What does it say? 1 John 1:5, 1 Thessalonians 5:5, Ephesians 5:1-12, 2 Corinthians 6:14, Luke 11:35, Leviticus 17:16. This is by no means an exhaustive list I encourage you to read them and study more concerning Gods concern for our holiness.

Leslie Vincent

AMEN! We can't just live on the parts of scripture that fit into our lives-we need the WHOLE counsel of God!

DaNella J Duncan Auten

From a Christian movie review "The positivity of Edward and Bella's abstinence needs to be tempered with a discussion about what's so very wrong with them "sleeping" together and him sneaking into her room. His resistance to turning her into a vamp must be contrasted with her desperate desire to become one. Her obvious love for her father needs to be stacked up next to her willingness to deceive him both when his life depends on it and when it just suits her romantic desires." Sorry guys I do think the bad outweighs the good.

Glad you posted this. I do not understand Christians going to see this movie. I know several people - good Christians - who see absolutely nothing wrong with Twlight. I don't understand it. Flee from evil... Don't compromise just because something is popular and mainstream.

My mother won't let me go to see New Moon because she thinks it all comes from the devil. I have read the first and second book and now working on the third 1. Because they are really good, and 2. Because she told me not to. I have a great relationship with God, but when my mom tells me somehthing I like comes from the devil and I shouldn't read/watch it, it sort of pushes me away from God sometimes. I just wish parents would be a little more open with our decisions and not so biased. Let us make our own mistakes. God put us on this earth knowing we would make mistakes and it will only help us to grow and become closer to him.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.-Philipians 4:8
